Political Correctness--give me a break!
We have enough problems in my own denomination (SBC) but the United Methodists have gone the way of political correctness. I can't see John Wesley worrying about this. The UMC has decided that it can not have its General Conference in Richmond, VA in 2012 because the Richmond Braves (Atlanta Braves minor league team) has a Native American mascot! I am not making this one up. Read about it here.
I have lots of great UMC friends. But I can't for the life of me understand this one. If they have problem with the mascot, then go protest the Braves office in Richmond during the General Conference.
With this logic, they may as well move Emory University (UMC University) from Atlanta. This is about as dumb as when the SBC boycotted Disney a few years ago. What purpose is this going to serve for the Kingdom of God?
With this new logic, I propose a new guidelines for SBC convention sites based on a cities athletic teams mascot:
1. Greensboro (2006) is fine because the UNC Greensboro mascot is a Spartan--Rigorously self-disciplined or self-restrained. Courageous in the face of pain, danger, or adversity. Some may have a problem with this because it represents war.
2. San Antonio, TX - June 12-13, 2007 - Spurs -I don't know about this one because Spurs are used to hurt horses. We don't want to upset the Animal Rights people.
3. Indianapolis, IN - June 10-11, 2008 (proposed) --Colts and Pacers- Colts are OK because everyone loves horses. Pacers could be a problem because that represents race cars that burn up our natural resources.
4. Louisville, KY - June 16-17, 2009 (proposed) --Cardinals- this is a great location because everyone loves birds.
So from now on we need to examine the mascots of proposed cities to make sure we can have meetings in those locations.

What about when we went to Las Vegas back in the late 80's?
Their mascot is two showgirls.
UNLV are the rebels.
We might have to retroactively protest ourselves having been there.
Yeah, and what about Orlando? Their basketball team is the Magic, which is a big no-no for Baptists. Same thing for Washington, which has the Wizards. Oh, I forgot, they're already off the list--Redskins creates the same problem as Braves, while Nationals is an obvious insult to people from other countries. I'm not too sure Indianapolis would be OK because of the Colts. Their emblem is a horseshoe, which is a symbol of how humanity has oppressed horses for thousands of years. And we might have to punish Louisville because of the Kentucky Derby.
