How will we ever make a difference?

The wacko's from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS were at it again yesterday. On a day when most of the nation was remembering our heros for their sacrifice in protecting our country, the people of Westboro were protesting at Arlington Cemetary. Read about it here and here. I don't know what Bible they are reading from but I can't see Jesus protesting a funeral. I don't see Jesus condemning people during their grieving. Jesus reached out to sinners like me. He told the woman caught in adultery to go and "sin no more." He wept at the tomb of Lazarus. How will those who have no relationship with Christ take us serious when we have hate-filled people likt this. God help us all!

This stuff makes my skin crawl. They also protest at the memorials and funerals of fallen war heroes. That is SO WRONG.

And people wonder why using the name "Baptist" can have a negative connotation in regions like ours? Just go look at this "Baptist" church's website. It is www.godhatesfags.com.

WARNING: It will make you made enough to spit.

I have the same sentiments but then i realize that Jesus calls us to love them, too. Perhaps we should send missionaries there..

I may be wrong, but I think these people from Westboro are so far fetched that even most lost people would not take them seriously or to be an accurate representation of the Christian faith.

Who wants to road trip to Kansas and pull a "sidewalk preacher" in front of their church? We can yell too, because it's in their culture to respond to yelling.

Joe,

You may be on to something.

Jamie,

Unfortunately, people do listen to them. They are on TV. Hannity and Combs had them on recently.

Jamie, I have a gay friend who is absolutely appalled. The hurt he feels from them protesting the funeral of one of his friends who was murdered here in Alabama is something most of us don't understand. It's not only a hinderance, it's full out Satanic opposition. And plenty of people pay attention.

It's people like that who need a reminder that it's God who dishes out justice and wrath, not us.

It wouldn't hurt to see the SBC come out and condemn Westboro though. Good luck getting that through.

Kevin, Joe,

While I know a little about the Westboro group, I had never heard anything about them from a major news outlet. That's why I have not taken them very seriously.

I agree that Richard Land or someone should come out and speak against these guys. Why don't we shoot some emails his way -especially anyone who has personally seen the effects of this group- and see what happens???

Jamie, Congress recently passed a bill to stop protesting at federal funerals because of Westboro. They're making an impact, for sure. And the media has definitely picked up on it, they're just not big enough right now to go after. Think of it this way- Anderson Cooper is too busy hunting down polygamists to deal with Phelps... but I'm sure once that Jeffs guy is in jail, they'll switch to the other crazy religious kooks. To be honest, I think they should. And then I think we should speak out LOUDLY against Westboro.

And if I'd have thought about it earlier, I'd have pushed for a resolution at the SBC denouncing the Westboro group. If we can boycott Disney, we can dang well speak up and out against hate-speech.
